Mycoplasma (MH)

• In women: Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), vaginal discharge, and pelvic pain
• In men: Urethritis, manifested as pain during urination or discharge from the penis
• Joint pain or arthritis (less common)
• Fever (rare)
• It can be asymptomatic, meaning no symptoms are present

Testing for Mycoplasma hominis is advised if symptoms of a genitourinary infection are present or if you have a sexual partner diagnosed with an MH infection. Testing shortly after exposure may not always yield accurate results due to the incubation period of the bacteria. Generally, waiting a few weeks post-exposure or until symptoms manifest is recommended for more accurate testing.

Mycoplasma hominis infections are typically treated with antibiotics. The choice of antibiotic depends on the site and severity of the infection. Commonly prescribed antibiotics include tetracyclines, such as doxycycline, or macrolides, such as azithromycin. It’s important to complete the full course of antibiotics and for sexual partners to be treated simultaneously to prevent reinfection.

The best way to prevent Mycoplasma hominis infection is by practicing safer sex. This includes using condoms correctly every time you have sexual intercourse, limiting the number of sexual partners, and engaging in regular health screenings if you are sexually active. It’s also important to be aware of any symptoms and seek medical advice promptly if symptoms of a genitourinary infection are present.
