Ureaplasma

Ureaplasma is a group of tiny bacteria commonly found in the urogenital tracts of both men and women. They are part of the normal genital flora but can cause infection under certain conditions. Ureaplasma species, particularly Ureaplasma urealyticum and Ureaplasma parvum, are associated with a range of conditions such as urethritis, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), and infertility. They can also be sexually transmitted, though they are not always classified strictly as STIs.

What are the symptoms of Ureaplasma?

  • In women: Unusual or increased vaginal discharge, pelvic pain, burning sensation during urination, possible infertility
  • In men: Urethritis (inflammation of the urethra), characterized by burning sensation during urination, penile discharge
  • Infertility and increased risk of premature birth in pregnant women
  • It can often be asymptomatic, meaning no symptoms are present

How soon after exposure should I get tested for Ureaplasma?

Testing for Ureaplasma is generally recommended if you have symptoms indicative of a urinary tract or genital infection, or if your sexual partner has been diagnosed with Ureaplasma infection. Testing shortly after exposure might not always be accurate due to the bacterium’s incubation period. It’s usually advisable to wait a few weeks post-exposure or until the onset of symptoms for testing.

What is the treatment for Ureaplasma?

Treatment for Ureaplasma typically involves a course of antibiotics, such as doxycycline or azithromycin. It’s important to complete the entire course of treatment even if symptoms improve early on. Both sexual partners should be treated simultaneously to prevent reinfection. Resistance to certain antibiotics has been observed, so treatment may be adjusted based on sensitivity tests.

How can I protect myself from Ureaplasma?

To reduce the risk of Ureaplasma infection, practice safer sex by using condoms correctly during all sexual activities. Limiting the number of sexual partners and engaging in regular health screenings, particularly if you are sexually active with new or multiple partners, is also advisable. Maintaining open communication with sexual partners about STI testing and status can help in prevention and early detection.
