Rye (pollen)

• Sneezing
• Runny or congested nose

Cross-reactivity between rye pollen and certain foods can occur, particularly in those with grass pollen allergies. Foods that might trigger reactions include:

• Grains, especially those closely related to rye, like wheat and barley.
• Melons and bananas, common triggers for those with grass pollen allergies.
• Tomatoes and potatoes.

• If you experience allergy symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, and itchy eyes during the grass pollination season, particularly when rye is known to be flowering.
• If your symptoms worsen in rural areas or near fields where rye is cultivated.
• If standard over-the-counter allergy treatments do not effectively control your symptoms.
• If you have asthma and notice a seasonal pattern in the exacerbation of your respiratory symptoms.

• Avoid outdoor activities when the pollen count is high, especially on windy days or during early morning hours.
• Keep windows closed during the rye pollination season to prevent pollen from entering your home.

• Shower and change clothing after being outdoors to remove pollen.
