14 November · Small checks make a big difference

World Diabetes Day

Know your blood sugar. Compare our diabetes tests side by side: what each one measures, how the sample is taken and what it costs.

Campaign runs November 9 – November 15

  1. 01

    HbA1c

Reflects your average blood sugar over roughly two to three months.

  2. 02

    Glucose

Shows your blood sugar at the time of the test.

  3. 03

    Lab-analysed

Your sample is analysed by an accredited lab, and your results come with clear explanations.

Choose how you want to check your blood sugar

Start with how the sample is taken. Each way suits different needs – more markers doesn't automatically mean a better choice.

Test at home

Take the sample yourself when it suits you and post it to the laboratory. You take a small finger-prick sample yourself with the kit and send it to the laboratory.

Urine rapid test

A quick urine test with an instant result. Not the same as a laboratory blood test. You dip a test strip in a urine sample and compare the colour with the chart.

When should you speak with a doctor?

A home test can show whether a value is worth discussing, but it cannot diagnose diabetes. Contact your doctor if you notice:

  • Feeling very thirsty or passing urine more often, especially at night
  • Tiredness, unexplained weight loss or blurred vision
  • Cuts or wounds that heal slowly, or repeated infections
  • A test result outside the reference range

If you feel very unwell, contact your doctor or local out-of-hours service. In an emergency, call your local emergency number (112 in the EU).

What is World Diabetes Day?

World Diabetes Day is held every year on 14 November, the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who co-discovered insulin. It is led by the International Diabetes Federation, and the blue circle is its international symbol.

  • You are over 40

Frequently asked questions

No. These tests give you information about markers linked to blood sugar. A diagnosis can only be made by a doctor or other healthcare professional.

Glucose is the amount of sugar in your blood at the time of the test. HbA1c reflects your average blood sugar over roughly the past two to three months.

No. A urine strip shows whether glucose and ketones are present in urine. It is a simple indication only and does not replace a blood test or a medical assessment.

Contact your GP or another healthcare professional to discuss your result. If you feel unwell, seek medical advice straight away.

No. HbA1c reflects your average blood sugar over the past two to three months, so fasting is not needed. Always follow the instructions that come with your test.

World Diabetes Day is held every year on 14 November. It is led by the International Diabetes Federation and marked in more than 160 countries.
