Fusobacterium mortiferum is an anaerobic gut bacterium, meaning it grows in low oxygen environments such as the intestine. It is mainly relevant because it can reflect how protein rich food residues are broken down and fermented in the gut. Higher levels can be linked to a gut environment where protein fermentation is more active, which may contribute to stronger stool odour, gas, or changes in stool quality.
