The Parasite Test detects six common parasites using a stool sample: Giardia lamblia, Entamoeba histolytica, Cryptosporidium spp., Cyclospora cayetanensis, Blastocystis hominis, and Dientamoeba fragilis. While these parasites can remain dormant for years without causing symptoms, they may later become active, leading to issues such as IBS, diarrhea, abdominal pain, fatigue, depression, or joint problems. Taking this test allows you to proactively manage your health and make a fresh start.

Additionally, considering nutrient level tests for Amino Acids, Vitamins (B12, folate, D, E, Q10), and a Nutrition test can be insightful, as parasites may affect nutrient absorption. For a broader understanding of gut health, our Candida, Gut Microbiome XL, and SIBO tests offer further insights into your digestive system’s condition.

Which parasites are analyzed in the Parasite test?

Blastocystis hominis
Blastocystis hominis is a common protozoan intestinal parasite, often identified in people with gastrointestinal complaints. While its pathogenic role is debated, it's associated with a range of digestive symptoms and is a frequent finding in stool tests worldwide.
Dientamoeba fragilis
Dientamoeba fragilis is a single-celled parasite that inhabits the human gastrointestinal tract. It's associated with dientamoebiasis, a condition that can cause a range of digestive symptoms. The parasite's mode of transmission and pathogenic potential are subjects of ongoing research.
Giardia lamblia
Giardia lamblia is a protozoan parasite that causes giardiasis, a common intestinal infection. Notoriously resilient, it can survive in various environments, particularly in water, leading to outbreaks in communities with contaminated water sources.
Entamoeba histolytica
Entamoeba histolytica is a protozoan parasite that causes amoebiasis, a disease that can range from asymptomatic to severe dysentery and liver abscesses. It is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in tropical countries with inadequate sanitation facilities.
Cryptosporidium spp.
Cryptosporidium spp. are a group of protozoan parasites that cause cryptosporidiosis, a gastrointestinal illness. Notable for their resilience in various environments, especially water, these parasites can cause outbreaks of diarrheal disease in both humans and animals.
Cyclospora cayetanensis
Cyclospora cayetanensis is a microscopic protozoan parasite that causes cyclosporiasis, a gastrointestinal illness characterized by prolonged and relapsing diarrhea. Primarily found in tropical and subtropical regions, it has been responsible for various foodborne outbreaks globally.

Parasites: A Hidden Health Risk Worldwide

Contrary to common belief, parasites aren't confined to exotic countries; they are a global issue. Many individuals carry parasites without realizing it, as they often cause only mild symptoms or none at all. Furthermore, parasites can remain dormant for years, activating only when the immune system weakens. Whether contracted locally or during international travel, you could unknowingly carry parasites for a long time before experiencing any health issues. This underscores the importance of awareness and proactive health checks to identify and address parasitic infections promptly.

Common Symptoms of Parasites

  • Upset stomach (cramps, flatulence, loss of appetite)
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • Diarrhoea and/or constipation
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • And many more symptoms.

Choosing the Right Test: Parasite or Other Gut Test?

If you're dealing with gut problems, consider our other gut health tests that analyze gut flora, malabsorption, leaky gut, and more. We offer a range of tests, from targeted to comprehensive. For concerns like Candida, we provide a specific test. Additionally, a separate breath test is available for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), measuring bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine.

How Does the Parasite Test Work?

The Parasite Test uses the "Multiplex Real-time PCR" method, offering several advantages:

  • Detects minimal amounts of parasites
  • Eliminates the chance of false positives
  • Suitable for mailing via regular post
  • Reliable results, even for asymptomatic individuals

You can perform all our health tests, including stool tests for parasites, at home. The test kit includes everything you need. After completing the test, send it to our ISO-certified lab. You'll then receive your results digitally, providing valuable insights into your gut health.

Beyond Parasites: The Importance of Nutrient Deficiency Testing

When dealing with potential parasite infections, understanding the full scope of your health is important. Parasites can affect your body's ability to absorb nutrients, leading to deficiencies that can exacerbate health issues. This is why, alongside standard parasite testing, considering tests for nutrient deficiencies is highly recommended.

After a backpacking trip through parts of South America, I came back with more than just memories and souvenirs. A lingering fatigue and persistent stomach issues hinted at a possible unwanted 'guest'. Concerned about potential parasites, I decided to use the Parasite Test. The kit arrived promptly, with easy-to-understand instructions ensuring a smooth sample collection. A few days later, the results were in. To my dismay, they indicated a parasitic infection. The detailed breakdown of the results provided a clear understanding of the type of parasite and its potential impact on my health. Armed with this information, I sought medical intervention and started on a targeted treatment plan. Within weeks, my health began to improve. For travelers or anyone suspicious of a parasitic infection, this test is a must. It provided me with invaluable insights, allowing for timely treatment. :)
