Neurotransmitters play a crucial role in shaping our behavior and emotions. Imbalances in these vital chemicals, such as serotonin, dopamine, adrenaline, and norepinephrine, are often closely associated with conditions like depression. The Neurotransmitters Basic Test provides a detailed analysis of these neurotransmitters, offering a clearer understanding of your mental and emotional health. For those interested in a broader analysis that includes GABA and glutamate, our comprehensive Neurotransmitter Plus test extends the insights into these additional key neurotransmitters.

Which items are measured in the Neurotransmitters Basic test?

Adrenaline/Epinephrine
Adrenaline, also known as epinephrine, is a hormone and neurotransmitter produced by the adrenal glands. It plays a key role in the body's fight-or-flight response, rapidly preparing the body for action in high-stress situations. Adrenaline increases heart rate, expands air passages, and boosts energy production, making it crucial for survival mechanisms.
Dopamine
Dopamine is a vital neurotransmitter in the brain, known as the 'feel-good' chemical. It plays a crucial role in regulating mood, motivation, and pleasure. Dopamine also affects movement, memory, and focus. Imbalances in dopamine levels can significantly impact mental health, influencing conditions like depression, anxiety, and Parkinson's disease.
Noradrenaline/Norepinephrine
Noradrenaline, also known as norepinephrine, is both a hormone and neurotransmitter. It plays a crucial role in the body's fight-or-flight response, similar to adrenaline, but also has a significant impact on mood regulation. Noradrenaline helps increase alertness, arousal, and speeds up reaction time. It also helps regulate blood pressure by causing blood vessels to constrict.
Serotonin
Serotonin, a key neurotransmitter often dubbed the 'happiness chemical', plays a crucial role in regulating mood. It also participates in sleep, digestion, bone health, and blood clotting. The gut mainly produces serotonin, impacting the brain and body by influencing various physiological processes and emotional states. An imbalance in serotonin levels can significantly affect both mental and physical health.
Noradrenaline/Adrenaline ratio
The noradrenaline (norepinephrine) to adrenaline (epinephrine) ratio refers to the relative levels of these two hormones in the body, both of which are involved in the fight-or-flight response. Typically, the body produces more noradrenaline than adrenaline, but this ratio can vary depending on factors like stress and physical activity.
Creatinine
Creatinine is a waste product produced by muscle metabolism, commonly used as an indicator of kidney function. It is generated from creatine, a molecule important for energy production in muscles, and is filtered out of the blood by the kidneys and excreted in urine.

Understanding Neurotransmitters and Their Balance

Neurotransmitters, crucial molecules in our nervous system, transmit signals between nerve cells. They significantly influence our behavior, emotions, and mental health. For instance, imbalances in neurotransmitters can link to depression. Our Neurotransmitters Basic test measures key neurotransmitters: serotonin, dopamine, adrenaline (epinephrine), and noradrenaline (norepinephrine), providing insights into your mental and emotional well-being. For a more comprehensive analysis including GABA and glutamate, consider the Neurotransmitter Test Plus.

Key Neurotransmitters Analyzed

  • Serotonin: This neurotransmitter plays a vital role in mood regulation, sleep, appetite, and blood pressure. Initially, acute stress elevates serotonin levels, but chronic stress can deplete them, leading to conditions like depression, anxiety, and insomnia.
  • Dopamine: Known as the feel-good hormone, dopamine drives our motivation, concentration, and cognitive abilities. It's essential in our reward system, and imbalances can result in issues like depression, restless legs, and compulsive behaviors. Parkinson's disease, characterized by tremors, is also linked to dopamine deficiency.
  • Adrenaline (Epinephrine): Produced in the adrenal medulla, adrenaline boosts mental activity, heart rate, and blood pressure, particularly in response to stress.
  • Noradrenaline (Norepinephrine): This neurotransmitter prepares the brain and body for action, increasing blood pressure and enhancing motivation and concentration. It's a precursor to adrenaline and rises with stress.

How the Test Works

You can easily complete our Neurotransmitters Basic test at home. Just fill a tube with your second morning urine sample and send it to our ISO-certified lab. We'll analyze your sample for levels of dopamine, serotonin, adrenaline, noradrenaline, and the adrenaline to noradrenaline ratio. We also measure creatinine to ensure your urine concentration is normal, as abnormal dilution or concentration can affect the test results. Once the analysis is complete, you'll receive your results digitally.

FAQ

How is the Neurotransmitters Basic test carried out?

Our Neurotransmitters Basic test is a home test kit. After ordering, we will send you a kit with everything you need to collect the urine sample. Then, simply return your sample to us in the pre-paid envelope.

Who would benefit from testing their neurotransmitters?

Those with mood disorders such as depression and anxiety may find insights from serotonin and dopamine levels, which are often linked to these conditions. People experiencing chronic stress or anxiety could benefit from understanding their adrenaline and norepinephrine levels, crucial in the body's stress response. It's also useful for individuals with ADHD or cognitive issues, as dopamine is key for focus and attention, and those with sleep disorders, given serotonin's role in sleep regulation. Furthermore, patients with conditions like Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Fibromyalgia, and those undergoing psychiatric treatment, might gain valuable information to tailor treatment strategies.

What happens if I fail to take the sample?

If you read the instructions carefully before you take the test and it should go well. Should something go wrong, you are welcome to contact us and we will help you.

How quickly will I receive my results?

Once we receive your sample, average response time is 10-15 business days to receive results.

When should I take the test?

The sample should be collected from the second morning urine. Normally that is sometime between 08.00-10.00.

Anything else to consider before taking the test?

48 hours before the test: Avoid fish/shellfish (including fish/shellfish sauces and omega-3 supplements). The evening before the test: Avoid bananas, cheese, almonds, nuts, green and black tea (fruit tea is allowed), vanilla and products containing vanilla, cocoa and chocolate, alcohol, coffee and beverages containing caffeine, energy drinks, nicotine. The morning before sampling: please refrain from physical exercise. Note that women should not do the test while menstruating.

Does SSRI affect the test?

Taking SSRIs (antidepressants), 5-HTP or tryptophan will affect your test results. Avoid intake 5-7 days before the test, unless you wish to measure how your levels are in combination with these drugs/supplements.
