PCOS

PCOS stands for polycystic ovary syndrome and means that ovaries form on one or both ovaries, which often results in high testosterone levels in the body and an irregular or completely absent menstruation. Many people can have PCOS without noticing any problems at all, while in others it can lead to a lot of different symptoms. There is help available if you experience problems with PCOS, but a first step is to know your hormone values – mainly for testosterone but also the relationship between estrogen and progesterone. Something that also has a big impact on PCOS is how your blood sugar levels are.

Common symptoms of PCOS are:

  • Pimples
  • Increased hair on the body
  • Infertility
  • General depression
  • Decreased sex drive

Testosteron
Excessive testosterone levels, which are a common side effect of PCOS, affect ovulation and our body hair. A proven way to reduce testosterone levels is to lose weight, which has been shown to lead to ovulation returning to normal and hair growth on the body decreasing. Losing weight can be difficult for many and it is therefore important to seek help if you feel that you can not do it on your own. A dietitian or doctor can help you set up a diet plan and having the support of a good friend or support group during the process can also be very helpful.

Estrogen och progesteron
If PCOS means that you get more hair on the body and / or pimples, birth control pills with estrogen and progesteron can be a good treatment method. Gestagen is a synthetically produced hormone that has many properties similar to those of progesterone – the hormone that together with estrogen ensures that the hormone balance is maintained.

Diabetes
The risk of developing type 2 diabetes is often linked if you have PCOS, and obesity is also a contributing cause linked to abnormal testosterone levels. If you have PCOS, you will most likely also have a high testosterone level, which then creates a vicious circle. Losing weight is therefore usually a good approach to reduce testosterone levels and reduce the risk of developing diabetes.
