Food Intolerance Tests

Allergy test, food intolerance test or both?

Food allergies and food intolerances are two completely different things. Many people think of allergies as a very strong reaction, but food allergies can also cause mild symptoms such as red eyes or a runny nose. Allergy is an immunological reaction, while food intolerance is often a gastrointestinal reaction. Food intolerance can cause milder or more severe symptoms, such as digestive issues, fatigue, brain fog and depression.

The tests are collected from home and analyzed in an ISO certified lab.

What is the difference between allergy and food intolerance?

Allergy is a reaction from the body’s immune system to substances that are actually harmless. The body produces IgE antibodies that activate substances that release histamines and other inflammatory molecules, leading to inflammation and giving different symptoms depending on where in the body it occurs. An allergic reaction often occurs immediately after ingestion or exposure to the item, as opposed to a hypersensitivity reaction.

Common symptoms of allergy:

  • Runny nose
  • Itchy and / or red eyes
  • Sneezing
  • Swelling around eyes or mouth / throat
  • Skin problems, such as eczema

A food intolerance, or food hypersensitivity, is often a gastrointestinal reaction. The body also produces antibodies in this case, but these are instead called IgG antibodies. The symptoms usually take several hours up to sometimes several days before they appear and can be mild and diffuse, but still very troublesome. As it often takes longer before the symptoms appear, it can be more difficult to discover on your own what you are intolerant to, especially if you react to several different things.

Common symptoms of food intolerance:

  • Fatigue
  • Stomach problems
  • Brain fog
  • Skin problems
  • Headache

Both allergies and food intolerances are measured in blood.

If you have problems with a lot of food intolerances, it can be good to do any of our intestinal tests to check if you have, for example; a leaky gut; how the intestinal flora balance is; and how the digestive functions work. An unbalanced gut can often lead to both allergies and intolerances.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

I was diagnosed with food intolerance to wheat, can I eat gluten?

If you get an indication on wheat hypersensitivity in your food intolerance test, it does not mean that you are gluten intolerant. Gluten is only part of wheat and if you eat gluten-free food, it may contain other parts of wheat that you can react to. Of course, it can be the case that you do not tolerate gluten either, but it must be measured separately to know for sure and it is unnecessary to exclude foods that you do not have problems with.

If you want to know if you are gluten intolerant, we measure gluten in the large test Food Intolerance Test 240 items, alternatively you can only measure Gluten intolerance – Celiac disease separately.

I am lactose intolerant but did not get an indication on this in the food intolerance test, why?

Milk allergy, milk intolerance and lactose intolerance are three different things. In lactose intolerance, it is the milk sugar (lactose) that the body is unable to break down. It is thus about enzyme deficiency; the body lacks or has too little of the enzyme lactase needed to break down lactose.

In milk allergy, it is the proteins in the milk that are not tolerated and the immune system produces IgE antibodies, which in turn activate immune cells in the body that cause inflammation. Milk intolerance also produces antibodies, but these are instead called IgG antibodies. Milk allergy and milk intolerance are tested via a blood test, while lactose intolerance is tested via a breathing test.
